A Family Enterprise

Written by Pieter Vanderpol

"God has really blessed us. I made eight dollars today." Unable to do physical labour, Willem Vanderpol had mustered all his courage and had started selling fish door-to-door although hardly able to speak English. He persevered. The book "First with the Finest" details the transition from fish to eggs to commercial/industrial egg ingredients and more, in all covering a business journey that spans seventy years and involves hundreds of fellow Dutch immigrants and their children.

Back in February 1951, just two months after his arrival in Canada, the message from the doctor was grim: 'Your working days are over'. Still learning the English language, how was he going to care for his wife and eight children, of which the oldest was just a young teenager.

'First With the Finest' candidly details the journey from door-to-door peddling to a multi-national enterprise that via twists and turns is now operated by two of Willem's grandchildren. Along the way, numerous people became part of the Vanderpol corporate experience, which is very frankly told by oldest son Pieter, supplemented by a number of 'associates' who are part of the Vanderpol history.
