A Day in the Life of the Mighty Eighth

Written by John Meurs

When author John Meurs was a nine-year old boy living in the Nazi-occupied country of The Netherlands, an American B-17 bomber crashed behind his house near the town of Apeldoorn. The date was Sunday, November 26, 1944.

John Meurs always wanted to know more about what had happened in the air on that fateful Thanksgiving Sunday. He started researching 'his' B-17 after retiring from his employment sixty years later.

The B-17 bomber was one of over 1,000 planes that flew that day on a mission to Germany of which 34 heavy bombers were lost. Meurs collected the personal stories of veterans who survived it, of families of airmen lost, and of witnesses of the crash. His research caused some survivors to reconnect after all those years.

Paperback, 552 pages, illustrated, a Dutch Heritage and WWII history title
