The Bittersweet Story of Holland Marsh

Written by Albert VanderMey

A Dutch Canadian heritage title

Draining swamps and marshes, and controlling groundwater levels, it seems to come so natural to the Dutch! Throughout Europe they have reclaimed land this way, growing plentiful crops where before it was (too) dangerous to tread. Now over 85 years ago, Dutch immigrants settled in such a newly diked and drained ‘polder’ north of Ontario’s capital, Toronto. These settlers went through many bittersweet moments and episodes, becoming the vegetable gardeners not only for this city, but also for Ontario and for markets beyond. Author Albert VanderMey engagingly chronicled this amazing story in his richly illustrated book.

Hardcover, 160 pages, With full colour jacket, 230 illustrations and an index plus a list of pre-publication supporters. A partial list of folks who pioneered as (co)farmers in the 'marsh'.
