Originally published in the Dutch language in the book "Goud, Wierook en Myrrhe" and as a series in the Weekly "De Reformatie" and local church periodicals, these 4 volumes of daily meditations is intended to help bring the Bible closer to the lives of Christians. The large-print daily meditations in this series cover 2 pages each although the theme at times continues for another or more days.

The book invites its reader to start each meditation with selected Scripture reading and a Psalm stanza for singing. The author, who taught at the Kampen Seminary (Broederweg), also wrote his widely acclaimed trilogy on Christ's passion.

R.J. Rushdoony, in Chalcedon Report of June 1991, called the author "one of the great Christian thinkers of this (20th) century, but much maligned." Dr. Schilder was among the first Dutch theologians to be incarcerated for his views on the Nazi ideology, which he strenuously opposed.
