Church History Narratives

Lesson material compiled by Apko Nap & Pieter Torenvliet

"Church History? Bo-o-ring!" students often will respond. "Why do we need to know about all those ancient doctrines and foreign guys?" Good questions.

To respond to such sentiments, the authors have worked to blow new life into this very important subject by drawing from fascinating stories in church history which will help to elicit the focus and interest the students.

In this curriculum series the authors have recaptured this excitement by using thrilling narratives as a vehicle to reach out to the imagination of the students. Every effort has been made to write stories which will appeal to the learners without vexing them with an overload of details.

Why teach church history? For one, it is the history of the church to which the students belong. More importantly, is the perspective that the redemptive work of the Lord throughout history, similar to the Jews in the Bible, is also part of their redemption in Christ. Therefore the stories, as well as the exercises designed with these stories, are meant to appeal to the students' sense of ownership and help develop their commitment to the Lord.

“… it is hard to image a more engaging, interactive, and instructional approach to the teaching of church history.” - Clarion, Jan. 20, 2012

Regarding the Teacher's Manual, it includes a wealth of background material, and offers numerous suggestions about how to teach chapter, word searches, puzzles, charts, pictures, diagrams, and most importantly, ready-made student activities. Simply, this curriculum developed for the Reformed Christian Education is a treasure trove for teachers and, we want to add, for home schooling parents. Handy for class-room copying in loose-leaf binder form (and or the DVD with powerpoint presentations).

The manual purchaser is entitled to copy from the binder or from the DVD for classroom use. Textbooks in The Flame of the Word series include: Book 1, Book 2A, Book 2B, and Book 3.
