For generations the continental European Reformed churches and their 'daughters' abroad have used the Belgic Confession in testifying to the world their faith in the sovereignty and grace of the eternal God unto salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. At the same time it has served as an arsenal from which they drew the sharpened weapons of truth in a never-ending conflict with error. On November 1, 1561, this confession was first delivered as an apology for the Reformed Christian faith to the King of Spain and his officials who aggressively persecuted those who disagreed with the doctrines as taught by the Roman Catholic Church. The confession's author, Guido de Bres, was martyred for his faith by hanging on May 30, 1567.
