The horrors during and after the Second World War gave rise to a particular reconsideration of God's involvement in suffering. Books were written which rejected the idea of a God who has people suffer because he wants it that way. In this way people wanted to tell the world that God had no responsibility for this suffering. At the same time they wanted to reassure their own rank and file that an omnipotent God would never torture them with all kinds of disasters.

This book was written against the background of these discussions. But it limits itself to listening to what a well-known book of the Bible says about these things. That involves focusing not only on the suffering of people in general but on those who expect good from God in spite of everything that they experience.
