Memoirs of Rev. Lammert J. Hulst, 1825-1922

It is with some reservation that the elderly Christian Reformed preacher Lammert J. Hulst back then put the recollections of his lengthy service as minister to paper. First published in 1913, his memoir covers several generations in a time when the churches he served were still in their formative years, in every way struggling to chart a course that would be faithful to Scripture and Confession. That struggle is very evident in Hulst's memoir as he becomes aware of the limitations of his very basic formal education and of his elementary training for the ministry when he searches for tutors helping him with mastering the classical languages he had not been taught. Rev. Hulst's memoir, as a teener, covers the Secession of 1834 era, the laborious rise of the Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerken in the Netherlands as well as the 1870s, and forward, history of the Reformed Church in America (RCA) and the Christian Reformed Church (CRC). Translator Jacob A. de Raadt made the subject matter far more accessible for today's readers by adding notes for context to the pages of the book. While church historians extensively cover the Secession of 1834 history, none of the ministers of that era, with the exception of Rev. Hulst, contributed a published memoir 'to tell the next generation' of what they thought, experienced, and or observed.

(Those interested in local (church) histories will not be disappointed. Places of note are Oud-Leusen (Dalfsen), Hoogeveen, Birdaard, Ferwerd, Stadskanaal, all in the Netherlands, and in the USA, Danforth, Illinois, Coldbrook in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and nearby Eastmanville. The memoir interacts with many colleagues and a range of congregation members.)
