This memoir highlights the changes the Blija, Friesland-born author witnessed in his life and - in some cases - helped to bring about. The most dramatic of these is the Liberation of synodical rule (Vrijmaking), which receives considerable attention in this book.

The author as well as others refer not so much to the church struggle of the 1940s in the Netherlands itself as to the outcome of that struggle. In his book, Rev. Van Dijk stresses that this struggle -he was delegated to Synod, while the outcome was very painful and even deplorable, also brought many blessings.

Describing his personal journey, he emphasizes the changes between how things were then and how they are now, and the changes in his own thinking during his years in the ministry.
