Dutch Clergy in Colonial America

Edited by Leon van den Broeke, Hans Krabbendam, and Dirk Mouw

In their book, the authors explore the ways in which the lives and careers of fourteen Dutch Reformed ministers illuminate important aspects of European and American colonial society of their times.

Based on primary sources, this collection reexamines some of the movers and shakers over the course of 250 years. The essays shed light on the high and low tides, the promises and disappointments, and the factors within and beyond the control of a new society in the making. The portraits humanize and contextualize the lives of these men who served not only as religious leaders and cultural mediators in colonial communities, but also as important connective tissue in the Dutch Atlantic world.

Endorsement

"This collection of biographical essays offers a fascinating gallery of men wrestling with their Christian mission. They come alive with all their strengths and weaknesses in these essays that reveal how they contributed to the religious culture of North America as agents of different Dutch Reformed heritages." - Fred van Lieburg, professor of the history of Dutch Protestantism at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam

"This exceptional book recounts the rich and remarkable history of fourteen Dutch pastors serving in America. . . . Based on superb scholarship in original sources on both continents, it contains a wealth of fascinating information about all of the pastors, as well as the cultural and civic contexts in which they served." - Jacob E. Nyenhuis, director, A. C. Van Raalte Institute, Hope College

"Transatlantic Pieties has done a great service for students of the history of religion and of American transatlantic relations. Exploring a little known past, this collection of clerical biographies opens up new avenues in comparative history." - Joris van Eijnatten, professor of cultural history, Utrecht University

"Finally we have a book with succinct interpretive biographical sketches of the long forgotten Dutch Reformed clerics who shaped the religious culture of colonial New York and New Jersey, each written by an internationally renowned scholar. Every student of the middle colonies will find this book an invaluable resource." - Robert P. Swierenga, senior research professor, A. C. Van Raalte Institute.
