A Dominican monk and preacher, Girolamo Savonarola is an Italian forerunner of the 16th century Reformation, who was martyred in 1498. This book helps bring the Dominican reformer out of his obscurity among the adherents of the Reformation. Centuries earlier, another Dominican, German reformer Martin Luther, also paid tribute to Savonarola by republishing a tract by him. While Luther was protected by local magistrates, there was no magistrate to save the Italian Dominican from martyrdom. A companion book by English author Elizabeth Warren also examines this detail of late medieval church history.
