A history of immigrants from The Netherlands to Australia, and the early days of the Free Reformed Churches in Western Australia in the 1950s

Written by Gerrit Johannes Bosveld

A Bosveld family memoir with a broad context that spans a life time. That lifetime includes a World War Two period under Nazi control, a regained liberty on two fronts, namely church and state, the question of staying put or leaving home for a future abroad, the process of immigration to and resettlement in Western Australia, and the many obstacles on the way that needed to be overcome to remain true to God's revealed will for His people. The memoir of the Bosveld family is as much the history of the church to which they belonged, and the federation of the Free Reformed Churches of Australia.

The large Bosveld family was not the first one in Western Australia. They joined the Slobbe family who had arrived the year before, in 1949. Together, they became the magnet, so to speak, that pulled others from the liberated Reformed Churches in the Netherlands to come over and help. Seventy years later the original twenty Free Reformed membership has grown well past the 3,500 number.

This book describes how the Lord blessed the lives of many families as they settled in Western Australia where they contended with many difficulties as they adapted to the different ways of doing things in their new country, in church matters, education and schools, employment, labour union controversies, language and housing. However difficult, the trust in the covenant promises shines through in this memoir as they dealt as family and as a fledgling congregation with these obstacles.

Unless the LORD builds the house,
they labour in vain who built it.
Unless the LORD guards the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
Psalm 127:1
